Our documentary is a social justice film that challenges the notions of beauty and centers on the lived experiences of adults with disabilities.

Zian is a disabled, Latine, queer, non-binary, artist, activist, art therapist and producer. Zian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1992. They started working in the Special Education school system 25 years ago. She went to Southwestern College @southwestern_college in Santa Fe, New Mexico for a dual degree in Art Therapy and Counseling. After grad school Zian moved to Portland, Oregon and started working with different non-profits working with adults with disabilities. Today Zian runs an art therapy group with HIV positive Oregonians. They love travelling, learning, cooking, reading, and practice mindfulness and meditation. Zian’s motto is, “Pace with Grace”.

“The earliest memory Ryan Hudson Peralta can bring to mind – the image that in many ways has defined the whole of his life – is the sight of his mother, Kimberly, explaining to him what the doctors had told her about his condition. “It’s almost unbelievable I can still remember this, since I was only about 2,” Ryan says. “Maybe even younger.” Perhaps it was his mother’s emotional sobs punctuating her words that make the vision so memorable. “She was telling me, ‘They say you can’t do it, but I know you can!’” he recalls. “When I was born, they told her, ‘Your son’s never going to be able to go to a regular school, or have kids, or get out of a wheelchair, or drive a car. He’ll never be able to use a regular this or an electric that.’ Basically, they said I was going to be in a bubble my entire life. They asked my mom if my parents even wanted to keep me.” That’s because Ryan was diagnosed with a birth defect called Congenital Limb Deficiency, which gave him severely shortened arms without hands and legs that stopped growing above the knee. In this remarkable film, we present the intimate and unforgettable stories we were honored to collect from an amazing array of persons with disabilities who generously spoke of their challenges, triumphs, and setbacks. We have disability representation from across nations, including Ghana, India, Taiwan, Chile, Canada, UK and US. We are so proud to bring their stories to an international audience.

Adults with disabilities want to be seen, and we want a seat at the table where decisions are made. Prejudice resides in all of us whether explicit or implicit. Our film pulls back the veil, urging people to rethink how they engage with other humans in the world. Through the interviews we learn about ableism, intersectionality, the differences between Disability Justice and Disability Rights, and so much more. These issues are similar in many ways to other movements like Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, LGBTQIA+. We are providing a platform for marginalized communities to tell their stories.

We live in a world that's centered on the rights and needs of non-disabled people. We envision a world where everyone with a disability matters. Our film is social justice driven. Its compelling arc touches on educational components, but also includes moving personal stories and experiences. In our research we found inequities worldwide, and our interviews substantiate them. Black and Brown persons with disabilities are the most marginalized.

In a social media driven culture, humankind pursues superficial concepts of beauty. We are flooded with unrealistic ideals of how one should look and act. Disability can happen to anyone at any time; it is part of being human. What we can do is embrace each of our unique lived experiences with respect, acceptance, and compassion. “Disability” is not a bad word.

Our documentary is a social justice film that challenges the notions of beauty and centers on the lived experiences of adults with disabilities.

WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR ART!
We are looking for art created by adults with disabilities focused on the theme of what beautiful means to you. In a social media driven culture humankind faces superficial concepts of beauty daily. We are flooded with unrealistic ideals of how one should look and act. In addition to the educational components of our film, the underlying theme dismantles the concept of beauty and highlights strengths and innate qualities that humans encompass raising awareness.

If your art makes it on screen, your name will be in the credits for the film. Each artist will have to sign a Film Release to be included.

Submission Guidelines:
1. An artist may submit 1-3 pieces.

2. Submissions will be accepted via email in jpeg format via email to zian@wearethemostbeautifulpeople.com . These images will be considered for marketing media for the documentary film. Please send quality images.

3. Please include contact information (name, address, email, phone).

4. All submissions should include a short (one paragraph) written bio. Please include how your disability has impacted your life and details about how your piece reflects the theme in the artist call.

5. Sizes from 8”x10” up to 24”x30”

6. All submissions should include for each piece of art: Title of piece, date created, media, dimensions. Submissions that are NOT complete with the above requirements will not be selected.

7. We will not accept forwards to websites for show submissions.

8. Deadline: August 15, 2023

9. Replies to submissions will occur within one weeks turn around.

10. Submissions limited to adults (18 years or older) with disabilities only.

Born in New York, raised in New Orleans, she attended 15 or more schools before dropping out in the 11th grade. Though she lived mainly in New Orleans, she also lived in Atlanta and Houston at different times of her life, and went back to Harlem, New York off and on. At 9 years old, Toni started writing poetry and philosophy about life, and her experience of aches and pains while growing up with a single mother in poverty. Yet, she was also able to experience the financial safety that her mother's better jobs created for their household. Toni was signed to a well-known rap label in the south and was featured on gold and platinum albums before she eventually had her 2nd brain aneurysm, and first stroke, & was told she may never speak or walk again. Even though Toni thought her music career was over as a singing rap artist after discovering she was partially paralyzed, it was only the beginning of her learning to love herself and pivoting into living her life's purpose. Since then, Toni has become an ordained/unorthodox minister/spiritual counselor, a wholistic health practitioner and a certified holistic health practitioner & consultant, , a more spirit driven philosopher and speaker, an Emmy award winner with Krip Hop Nation, and a friend of discipline and self mastery. tonihickman.com

Blind music producer and recording artist Mattmac @mattmaconline, has harnessed his melodic pop-trap beats and inspiring story, quickly establishing himself as ‘one to watch’ on the national scene with more than 10 million+ streams across platforms, and critical acclaim across @cbc, @ctv, @virgin Radio, and more.
